Independent fashion designer Ragnhild Totland approached RAND to create a name and identity for her silk scarf label – inspired by the nature and culture of her homeland, Norway. The designs take you through a journey of the Nordic landscapes using organic imagery such as stags, feathers and birds juxtaposed beautiful against vibrant colours to give the design a metropolitan edge.
The new name needed to be routed in the designer’s heritage as well as differentiate itself from the competition.
Our naming work unearthed the word ‘Alva’ – a girls name favoured by the Vikings, itself derived from the word Elf (Alv in Norwegian).
The logo device is formed from the words triangular letterforms, each overlaid to create a distinctive geometric symbol that suggests both a silk loom and the mountainous landscape of Norway.
The brand garnered critical acclaim in the fashion press and is now carried by online retailers Not On The High Street and Brand Alley.
